Picturegoers
Picturegoers is a series of original collages are made with vintage and contemporary magazines using a simple cut-out or slash technique. These works juxtapose vintage film magazines with contemporary advertising and porn magazines to reveal what might be beneath the facade or even what is ‘behind the scenes’. Modern porn magazines tell it like it is, brash colours, conventional poses and direct address to camera, often with a conventional and performed ‘female gaze’ and so Julia Andrews-Clifford has juxtaposed these with the more traditional model/actor/actress poses to provoke a comparison and question the surface of film and advertising imagery. From the very beginning, voyeurism, money, and power linked the film and pornography industries. The Picturegoer magazine pages from the 1950s came at the height of Hollywood Studio System when the access and control over stars personal lives were unprecedented. Picturegoer magazine in the US and Film Review gave ‘through the keyhole’ style reports on stars personal lives and fuelled/fulfilled their audience’s need for inside stories.
